Whenever Drake releases an album, the internet goes bananas. Having a New Music Friday release that correlates with Drizzy could get an artist’s Hype overshadowed. Here are our top 5 releases you may have missed because you were listening to Drake’s Scorpion.
# 1 The Knocks – Shades
The Knocks have been on fire ever since their release of Classic back in 2014. As a matter of fact, that song was one of the reasons I first fell in love. (An article about that later.) Their latest summer anthem, Ride or Die feat. Foster the People has been my go to jam to get the club groovin’. But with Drake droppin Scorpion, their latest release Shades may get overlooked. We’re here to remind ya’ll not to miss it!
# 2 The Magician – Build a Fire
The moment I woke up this morning, this is the first track I heard. I had to tweet about it. It was the reason this list was made in the first place. That being said, The Magician has really been making magic these days. He’s been combining rappers with a new twist on his signature dance music style. His last record Las Vegas was a collab with the lyricist Ebenezer, who also teamed up with Duke Dumont on Inhale to set the club on fire. I’ve been spinning each of these tracks in the club on almost a nightly basis. This latest release, Build a Fire calls on newcomers Clew & Prov. Their style vaguely resembles The Gym Class Hero’s on this one. Check it out
#3 Charlie XCX Focus
From a dj’s perspective, this track is a straight club banger. It’s going to give a great contrast to the fact I’ll have to be playing a lot of Drake in the coming weeks. The simplicity of the chorus magnify’s a deeper sentimental meaning. When you put all your focus and attention to love, you reap the rewards. Let’s dance!
Shallou & Riah – Lies (Le Youth Remix)
It’s a fact that anything Le Youth produces, I spin it, Or at the very least, give it a listen. I was blown away with his last single I Could Always feat. MDNR . I am dying to write a rap verse to it just for fun. The song is like a modern Ace of Base track. Best believe I mix in All That She Wants or Don’t Turn Around with it every time. That being said, make sure you don’t overlook his latest remix of Shallou & Riah’s Lie’s. Tell your local dj’s to play it too!
#5 Martin Solvieg – My Love
It may seem bias that only dance songs made it to the top 5 of this list. But let’s face it, how many rap artists were willing to drop the same day as Drake? Martin Solveig first caught my attention with the single Hello, and ever since then, his songs have been key components in my dj sets. My Love is no different. It’s a great song to mix with Justin Timberlake, Route 94, Calvin Harris, and the list goes on and on. If your a dj or just a causal Spotify listener, put this one in rotation.
