New Music Friday: September Ends 9/27/19

It’s time to wake up, September is ending! That means its time for another New Music Friday, curated by Dj Nick Flash. This week we have a very diverse mix of songs. Before we get into them, I’ll go over some songs that were cool, but just a little too “pop” to make it to this list.

Runner ups

Diplo & The Jo Bro’s released a joint called Lonely, which is part of his country themed project “Thomas Wesley.” It’s great to see Diplo go down this path of music, and I expect to see more and more pop artists infuse their sounds with country. DaBaby seems to be all over the charts these days, and this New Music Friday he drops his full length album KIRK. It’s not really my cup of tea, however I can appreciate the grind.

PNB Rock, French Montana, Post Malone, Lil Tecca, Russ, and an assortment of dope rappers dropped today, but no sign of Kanye’s anticipated album Jesus is King.

Top 10

Berhana makes the list again, and is quickly becoming one of my favorite new artists of the moment. My number one pick comes from a group called Broken Bells, which is a collab between Danger Mouse & James Mercer, who is the lead singer of the band The Shins. I loved Gnarls Barkley, and this collab is no different. Straight fire!

Newcomers on the list this week include REI AMI, who has a very unique style that caught me by surprise. Second is Sturgill Simpson, a country artist with a really funky grove, released Mercury RetroGrade. Third, we have Sam Smith and Renee Zellweger with a big band number that can’t help but make you happy. We can’t forget Galantis, who always makes festival bangers with real substance behind them. Lastly, we have Phil Good, H.E.R, and The Japanese House to close out the list. If I’m not mistaken, I heard The Japanese House live when they opened for The1975.

Without further or do, here is my Top 10 for the week.

10: Get Happy – Renee Zellweger feat. Sam Smith

Sam Smith

9. REI AMI – Snowcone

Wow. When she starts saying “Thrift store sweater with the holes” I felt that.

8. Phil Good – Wonder

That synth line in the hook too catchy.

7. Paulo Londra feat. A Boogie Wit da Hoodie

I really like when rappers and reggeaton artists fuse their sounds together.

6. H.E.R feat. YG

5. Sturgill Simpson – Mercury in Retrograde

4. The Japanese House

3. Galantis – Holy Water

2. Berhana feat. Crush – I Been

1. Broken Bells – Good Luck
