If it weren’t for Rick & Morty
, I probably wouldn’t have subscribed to Hulu in the first place. But now that I have, I compiled a list of the Top 5 Hulu movies to watch for the month of July that are completely OffKey.
Video on Demand is still a strange concept to me, coming from the era of video rental stores. I loved the fact that I could walk into a store and pick out anything I wanted to watch. But now with streaming services, you’re pretty much limited to what they got. Sure, you could go to Amazon
and rent whatever, but it’s just not the same. Filtering through VOD sites can become increasingly tedious, and more times than not I spend most of my time scrolling than actually watching. So what movies am I watching on Hulu this month? Allow me share with you.
Ingrid Goes West
Ever since I watched Safety Not Guaranteed Aubrey Plaza really won my heart, so I figured I’d give this flick a try. Especially since it’s also distributed by Neon, who has been acquiring some fantastic films lately, I really had nothing to lose.
The story tells the tale of Ingrid, an insecure fan girl who basically stalks social media influencers whom she admires to befriend them. Until of course they find out she’s nuts and want nothing to do with her. The movie centers around one such instance, as Indrid moves to L.A. after acquiring a good sum of money from her deceased Mother to be close to Taylor {Elizabeth Olsen}.
Without giving too much away, Ingrid isn’t actually nut’s. She’s just struggling with deep rooted anxiety’s and insecurities, and her journey to L.A. helps her to understand and come to grips with them. It’s not a comedy by any means, but there are certainly funny moment’s. Overall it’s an entertaining time if you can refrain from wanting to scroll through Instagram while you watch.
Tragedy Girls
Now here is a horror movie for the Social Media generation. What scared me the most about this movie was just how true to life it seemed. Two girls who literally commit murder in order to boost their internet presence. Not so far fetched these days.
This movie is a gore-fest from beginning to end too. You see them chopping up bodies, slitting throats, and much much more. What makes this movie even more disturbing is the complete lack of remorse the girls kill with. Alexandra Shipp & Brianna Hildebrand portray the modern teenage girl archetype perfectly. The type that just don’t give a fuck about anything that doesn’t directly boost their social standing.
The writer Chris Hill did a great job on the film, and he even gave us a bit of a shout-out on twitter as well. Look forward to what else he’s got up his sleeve.
Small Soldiers
Fun fact: I saw Small Soldiers in the movie theatre back in like 8th grade simply because it had Bone Thugs-n-Harmony & Henry Rollins together on a track. Not to mention the movie is about action figures coming to life and waging all all out war in a peaceful suburban neighborhood. What more could you ask for in a movie really?
This movie also has an all-star cast. You got Tommy Lee Jones as Major Chip Hazard, the psychopath antagonist in action figure from. You got Kirsten Dunst before the Bring it On day’s. Dennis Leary…who only seems to show up in random comedies like this and Sandlot. And who could forget the late great Phil Hartman?! Honorable mentions include David Cross from Arrested Development, Jay Morh from Jerry Maguire and Gregory Smith as the main character. Last but not least you have Kevin Dunn who pretty much plays the same Dad as he plays in Transformers.
This movie is dope. It’s like a Toy Story, only violent, and with real people. Must watch for any action figure fans out there. Speaking of action figures, you can buy the Small Soldiers figures on Amazon here..
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
With the announcement of Bill & Ted Face The Music this year, it’s only right we revisit San Dimas , California. When rewatching Bill & Ted, you forget that this movie is genuinely educational. It’s an entertaining history lesson at it’s finest, and one of the few movies out there that uses time travel in it’s plot besides Back to The Future. Let’s not forget the late great George Carlin as the all knowing Rufus.
It’s going to be hard to imagine what the new Bill & Ted film will be like without Rufus. But just seeing the dynamic duo back together on the big screen will be well worth it. Revisiting films in the future is always pretty cool regardless of whether the movie is good or not. The nostalgia factor alone makes it fun as hell.
So if you don’t own this movie, or it’s been a long time since you’ve seen it, Hulu that shit right the fuck now. Wyld Stalions!!!
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Ever since my 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray was stolen, I haven’t seen Roger Rabbit in forever. I never wanted to watch Roger without it, because the blu-ray came bundled with never before seen cartoons. Why would I want to see it without the option of those cartoons? Well, it’s tradition for me to watch this movie at least once every few years. Now that Hulu offers it I can put off grabbing the disk, at least for a little while anyway.
This movie was groundbreaking. To combine humans and animation as seamlessly as they did on this film still to this day has never been duplicated. Although they did give it a good effort with Cool World, but tat just doesn’t stand the test of time like Roger does. Add to the fact they we’re able to license Disney characters and Warner Brothers characters is epic. Then to create a whole Toon world where humans and toons co-exist is a child’s dream come true.
This is why Robert Zemeckis will forever be my favorite director. To produce such classics as Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future, & Forrest Gump puts him in the OffKey Hall of Fame.
