Intro
As a new magazine company, our budget is practically zero. Our capital is nil. That means all the big events we wanna go and cover, we can’t afford to right now. I know you know how that feels. To be on the outside looking in. To be at the velvet ropes, and the bouncer lets all your friends in except you. Yeah, that feeling. So to all those out there who wanted to go to San Diego Comic Con this year but couldn’t, this ones for you. For all of us poor unfortunate souls. SDCC 2018: An ode to those who missed it.
Recap
The content you’re about to see is outsourced from all the folks who were lucky enough to go. We’ve dedicated countless hours to finding the best stuff we would have covered, had we had the funds. We broke it down into a few main categories for you. Toys, Comics, Movies & Cosplay. Let’s make a pact from here on out: Any and every event that’s important to our inner children to attend, let’s do whatever it take’s to make it next year.
Toys & Collectibles
Toy’s & Collectibles are at the top of our list for SDCC 2018. It’s the toys that speak to our inner child the most. San Diego Comic Con is home to a multitude of exclusive collectibles that can only be found at the convention. Most of these exclusives go for double, triple, or if they are really coveted, quadruple their retail value on eBay. Here are a list of all of our favorites.
Neca
Neca is the Godzilla of the toy industry. Their quality, craftsmanship, and dedication to fans is unparalleled. It’s a company by collectors for collectors. They’ve spent years acquiring licenses and perfecting their sculpts. And this year, they’ve pulled out all the stops and revealed some incredible releases and prototypes. The video from Pixel Dan above gives you a rundown on everything they have to offer, but our favorite is TMNT.
TMNT
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the reason I know Neca in the first place. For super fans and collectors like me, what they are doing with the series is unbelievable. Their comic con exclusives are amongst the most coveted for Turtle fans all over the world. In 2017, the collectors box they dropped embodied everything I wanted my action figures to be growing up. Unfortunately, I missed my chance to get one. This year though, I wasn’t going let that happen. Unfortunately for other TMNT collectors, getting their hands on one proved to be extremely difficult.

Mondo
Aside from Neca, Mondo will be the only other collectible company we feature in this post. Because well, there just isn’t enough time in one day. Mondo came to have a special place in our hearts when they released a series of Back to The Future collectibles. Granted, we couldn’t afford them at the time, but hey, we can wish can’t we? They too have licensing rights to produce TMNT figures, and they do a fantastic job at it. Check out these amazing releases revealed for SDCC 2018 in the videos below! Standouts include Masters of The Universe, Batman the Animated Series, The Rocketeer, TMNT & much more!
Bonus – Hot Toys
Hot Toys is a brand for the more high end collectors. They produce hyper realistic figures that look as if they came straight out of the movie screen. Here’s a first hand look courtesy of Sideshow Collectibles.
There’s obviously a buttload of toy releases we didn’t mention. Hasboro, Mattel, Funko, Mezco, Diamond Select. The list goes on and on. Let’s keep our fingers crossed we will be there in 2019.
Best Comics – SDCC 2018
What’s mind blowing to me, is that actual comic books seem to be the hardest things to find on Google for SDCC 2018. Maybe I’m just not looking hard enough. But here is the best news we could dig up on actual comic book releases. Let us know your favorite comics and which titles you’re most excited to see.
Adventure Time – Season 11
According to SYFY Wire, Boom Studios hosted an emotional panel discussion. They announced that Adventure Time would be airing it’s last episode on September 3rd of this year. The series has curated quite the cult following. Although we have yet to really delve into it, Hulu does offer all the episodes. Seems to me like a quality binging experience.
That being said, Season 11 will continue in comic book form right where the series left off. It’s no wonder this series has been as successful as it has. The artwork is superb. It seamlessly mixes fairy tales, comedy, and post apocalyptic adventures in the land of Ooo. This cartoon really set the standard for modern animation. Image Comics & Netflix Present – Mark Millar ‘s The Magic Order – Cover Variant 1 of 6
Netflix is entering the comic book world. You heard that right, it’s not just limiting itself to streaming anymore. And I couldn’t be more excited. Mark Millar, the creator of Kick-Ass, has secured quite the deal for himself with Netflix. With the publishing backing of Image, and the astounding artwork of Oliver Coipel, we get to experience The Magic Order.
The Magic Order is a tale of hero’s that goes back generations upon generations. Five family’s of magicians, sworn to protect us from the evil’s that be, are being picked off one by one. The remaining order must band together to defeat the evil threat, before it not only destroys them, but destroy’s us all. Of course SDCC 2018 will feature some exclusive variant’s only available at con, so if you picked up an extra one, we’ll buy it from you!
Best Trailers – SDCC 2018
Movie trailers are what get all the hypebeasts buzzing at con. There’s no shortage of bad ass trailers and exclusives that dropped this year, here are a list of a few of our favorites.
Glass
It doesn’t get any more mind-blowing than this. Split already had me on the edge of my seat the whole movie. Now M. Night Shyamalan is creating a larger comic book Universe tying in the cast of Split & Unbreakable together? Hell to the yeah. Make sure to get caught up by re-watching Unbreakable, because as it is now I totally forgot the premise. But there’s absolutely no denying the bad-assness that is this trailer.
Shazam!
I’ll be blunt. When it comes to DC movies, I’m not usually impressed. The last DC movies I enjoyed were Christopher Nolan’s Batman story arc, but after that, nothing. They usually feel so over done without any real substance. So overacted, so cheesy. But Shazam! Now here’s a movie I can totally get behind. It feels like this dark coming of age story intertwined with real genuine humor. Not to mention kick-ass action scenes without the need to rely on tons of CG. Really impressive. What are your thoughts?
Disenchantment
I truly have a love/hate relationship with Netflix. Maybe my hate stems from the fact that I myself didn’t think of the idea first. But mainly it’s because there is just too much to watch. And most of it, let’s face it, isn’t worth watching. But the stuff that is worth watching, well, it’s really freaking good. Disenchantment looks better than good. Matt Groening delivers a fairy-tale-esq, Game of Thrones-esq, medieval period piece unlike anything on TV. Who else is stoked?
Best of Cosplay SDCC 2018
The crème de la crème of SDCC 2018 are the Cosplayers. Comic Con is bigger than Halloween to these people. My personal favorite characters to Cosplay are Marty McFly & Indiana Jones, but it’s only a rare few who can pull off screen accurate renditions of these characters. The one’s that can pull it off, I’m going to do a editorial on them in the near future. Till then, I’ve scoured the internet to bring you the best of the best SDCC Cosplayers. Here are a list of my favorite videos and pictures from the interwebs.
Game Of Thrones via CNET
While there was no HBO panel for Game of Thrones this year, the cast from the land of FIRE & ICE were all there. Here is some footage courtesy of CNET showcasing the best GOT cosplayers.

Bro’s & Cons
Here’s a video by some comic con first-timers that looks great. Most video’s I found were super cluttered and didn’t have any cinematic value. Great job to Bro’s & Con’s who also have a documentary on Cosplay coming out in the future. Subscribe to their channel.

Star Wars Cosplay – Is Star Wars Broken?
There is lot’s of division amongst Star Wars fans these day’s. After Disney took over, many fans are upset that they are doing a disservice to the franchise. IGN host Sydnee Goodman takes it to the “streets” of SDCC 2018 to see what the Cosplayers think.
Conclusion
Don’t ever grow up. Keep doing things that enrich your inner child. You will be rewarded beyond compare. If Comic Con is your thing, go. Find a way. If dressing up as an Evil Sith Lord get’s you going, don’t let anyone stand in your way. For us, it’s money holding us back from bringing you up close and personal content from events such as SDCC 2018. But not for long. For those of you reading this who wish they could have been there, let’s let nothing stand in our way next year. We all have superpowers after all, and it’s time we put them all to good use. See you in the future! P.S. Don’t forget to read our Reboot of Clarissa Explains it All!
